The microcephaly epidemic in NE Brazil “due to the Zika virus” has been well publicized in the international media. But is the Zika virus actually the cause? This area of Brazil produces a lot of GMO Roundup-Ready corn, soy, and cotton for export. This means considerable exposure to glyphosate in Roundup and other formulations in the water and the air, on top of whatever is present as a contaminant in food sources. Furthermore, the Tdap vaccine was aggressively administered to pregnant women in Brazil starting in 2015, cooincident with the microcephaly outbreak. Tdap contains aluminum, a well-established neurotoxin. Together with colleagues, I have published a paper arguing that aluminum and glyphosate are synergistically toxic in the brain.
Microcephaly is one of the conditions linked to neural tube defects, which, in turn, are linked to folate deficiency. Impaired folate metabolism is also a common feature in autism. Folic acid fortification of wheat-based products was introduced in the U.S. in 1998, coincident with the rapid rise in the production of GMO Roundup-Ready corn and soy crops. Folic acid is a synthetic, oxidized, and unmethylated form of folate, and it has important flaws in terms of how it’s metabolized. In this talk, I will argue that folic acid and glyphosate are synergistically toxic, and their disruption of the methylation pathways can lead to both neural tube defects and autism.
